How to choose hosting
for your website

The Dilys team 5 September 2026

Hosting is a decision made in five minutes and paid for over years. Three euros a month looks like a good deal until the site starts going down on your busiest day or takes six seconds to load. Here’s what really separates good hosting from cheap hosting, and how to choose without being a technical person.

What really matters

1. Disk speed (NVMe)

The difference between an old SATA drive and a modern NVMe drive shows up directly in loading speed, especially for WordPress sites and online stores, which make a lot of database queries. If the specs don’t mention NVMe, or at least SSD, that’s a sign of outdated infrastructure.

2. Real resources, not “unlimited”

“Unlimited space and traffic” is marketing. The real limits are elsewhere: CPU time, RAM, number of concurrent processes, I/O operations. When you exceed them, the site starts returning errors - usually right when you have the most visitors. Ask for these numbers, not for the gigabytes.

3. Server location

If your customers are in Bulgaria, a server in Sofia or at least in Europe means lower ping and faster response times. A server in the US adds latency to every request. The exception: if you target international markets, what decides is where your main audience is.

4. Support that actually responds

Test it before you pay: send a question outside business hours and see when and how they reply. When your site goes down on a Friday evening, the difference between a reply in 15 minutes and one in two days is the difference between a minor incident and a lost weekend of sales.

5. Backups - theirs and yours

Daily automatic backups that you can restore yourself are a must. The key question: how far back are they kept, and can you download them? A backup that exists only at the hosting company, and only from yesterday, is half a backup.

Choosing hosting for a website - servers and infrastructure
Hosting is the foundation. Everything else is built on it - including speed and SEO.

Types of hosting: who needs which

Shared hosting

Many sites on one server. Enough for brochure sites, blogs and small stores. Watch out: your neighbours affect your resources.

VPS

Guaranteed resources and more control. A sensible choice for growing traffic or a store with real revenue. Requires administration or a managed service.

Managed WordPress

Set up specifically for WordPress: caching, automatic updates, security. More expensive, but it saves on maintenance.

Dedicated server

For large projects with specific requirements. Full control and full responsibility - you need someone to maintain it.

Red flags

A price under €2 a month - the savings come from somewhere, usually resources and support. No SSL in the basic plan in 2026. No access to logs - when something goes wrong, you’re flying blind (and after a hack, logs are the first thing you need). No trial period or money-back guarantee. The domain is registered in the hosting company’s name - a trap you only notice when you try to move.

The difference between cheap and quality hosting is around €5-10 a month. The difference in results is seconds of loading time, peaceful nights and rankings on Google.

How hosting affects speed and SEO

Server response time (TTFB) is the first thing that happens on every page load - if it’s 800 milliseconds, every optimisation after it starts with a penalty. Google measures Core Web Vitals and uses them for ranking. That’s why hosting isn’t a “technical detail” but part of your SEO foundation - see how to fix Core Web Vitals and how much there is to gain.

What if I’m already with the wrong host?

Migration is a routine operation: the site is copied, tested on the new server, and only then is the domain switched over - done properly, visitors notice nothing. Most serious hosting companies do it for free, and we include it in our hosting services. The key is not to rush it on a Friday afternoon.

Conclusion

Ask about NVMe, real resource limits, location and backups, and test the support. Choose based on what your site will be a year from now, not what it is today. And remember what’s yours: the domain and the data - always.
