SEO for Online Stores:
The Complete Guide

The Dilys team 15 August 2026

An online store with good SEO gets customers for free every day; a store without SEO pays for every visitor for the rest of its life. And e-commerce SEO is a different discipline from SEO for ordinary websites: hundreds of pages, duplicate content, filters, out-of-stock products. Here is the complete guide.

Why SEO for stores is different

A corporate website has 20 pages; a store has 2,000. Categories, products, filters, pagination, variants: each of them is a potential entry point from Google, but also a potential problem (duplicate content, thin pages, wasted crawl budget). That is why SEO for a store starts with architecture, not with keywords.

Pillar 1: Architecture and categories

Category pages are the gold of e-commerce SEO: they target commercial queries (“women's shoes”, “used laptops”), the searches people actually buy from. The rules: a maximum of 3 clicks from the homepage to any product; a category description with real text (not 2 sentences below the products); clean URLs (/shoes/women/ instead of /?cat=17&filter=3); and smart filter management - combinations with search demand get indexed, the rest are closed off with a canonical.

Pillar 2: Product pages that rank

Unique descriptions

Copying the manufacturer's text = invisibility (the same text is on 50 sites). Rewrite it with real value for the customer - that is both copywriting and SEO.

Product schema

Price, availability, reviews and rating right in Google's results - the stars lift clicks by 20-30%. A must for every product.

Images

WebP format, compression, alt text with the product and the brand. Google Images is an underrated channel for stores - people buy with their eyes.

Out-of-stock products

Do not delete them (you lose the rankings): keep the page with an “out of stock” label plus links to alternatives. Use a 301 only if the product is never coming back.

Pillar 3: The technical foundation

Speed is a direct factor for both rankings and conversion: every second of delay cuts sales by ~7%. Quality hosting, caching and optimized images are not a luxury. The mobile version is the main one: Google indexes your mobile store, and over 70% of traffic comes from phones. Internal search: if customers cannot find something, they leave; the data from your site search is free keyword research.

Pillar 4: Content that sells before the purchase

A store's blog is not for “company news”. It catches the customer one step earlier: “how to choose a mattress”, “which bike for a beginner”. The person reading your guide today buys from you tomorrow - especially if the article links to the right categories. It is the same strategy we apply in classic SEO, except that for stores the effect is measured directly in orders.

In e-commerce SEO, do not ask “which keywords do I rank for?” but “which pages bring in orders?” Traffic without sales is vanity; 500 visitors a day on the right commercial keywords feed a business.

The five deadly sins of e-commerce SEO

Descriptions copied from the manufacturer; categories without text; deleted pages of out-of-stock products; filters that generate thousands of indexed duplicates; and a store launched with “we'll do SEO later”. If you recognize at least two of these, you are losing orders every day.

Conclusion

SEO for an online store is a marathon with the highest return in e-commerce: paid advertising stops when the budget does, while a ranking category page sells for years. Start with the architecture, fix the technical foundation, write for the customer - and measure in orders.
