A free tool that, for many local businesses, brings in more customers than the website itself - and yet it sits neglected for years, with the wrong opening hours and not a single photo. Your Google Business Profile is the shop window people see first. Here is how to set it up properly.
Why it matters so much
For searches with local intent - “dentist near me”, “car repair Plovdiv”, “flowers Varna” - Google shows a map with three businesses at the very top. This trio takes most of the clicks before the user even gets to the classic results. The profile also appears when someone searches for your company by name: opening hours, phone number, photos, reviews, directions.
For a business with a physical location or a service area, this is the fastest return in all of digital marketing - because the competition is local and the customers intend to buy today.
Setting it up, step by step
1. Take control of the profile
Google often creates profiles automatically from public data. The first step is to search for your business and, if a profile already exists, claim ownership. Verification is usually done by postcard, phone or video, depending on the case. If someone has already verified it (a former employee, a previous agency), there is a procedure for disputing it.
2. The category - the most underrated field
The primary category has a direct influence on which searches you appear for. Choose the most precise one, not the most general: “orthodontist” instead of “dentist”, if that is your focus. Add secondary categories for your other services too, but there is only one primary category, and it carries the most weight.
3. Complete and accurate details
Name (as it really is, without stuffed-in keywords), address, phone, website, opening hours - including holiday hours. Do you serve customers at their location? Set a service area instead of an address. The same spelling everywhere - on your website, on Google, on Facebook, in directories. Inconsistencies undermine the algorithm’s trust.
4. Photos - real ones, not stock
Profiles with photos get noticeably more calls and direction requests. Upload the front of the building (so people can find you), the interior, the team, real examples of your work. Stock photos from the internet achieve the opposite - they are easy to spot and they destroy trust. Add new ones regularly; it is a signal of activity.
Reviews: the currency of local rankings
Between two businesses that are equally close, the one with more and better reviews wins. Build a system instead of waiting:
Ask for them systematically - after a completed service, in person or with a message containing a direct link to the review form. Make it as easy as possible - the more clicks, the fewer reviews; use the short link from your profile or a QR code on site. Reply to every one, including the bad ones - a calm, specific reply to a negative review makes a better impression than ten five-star ones. Never buy fake ones: Google is getting better and better at spotting them, and the penalty is the removal of the entire profile.
The features almost nobody uses
Posts
Offers, news, events - they appear directly on your profile. A signal of activity and a free shop window.
Services and products
Describe what you offer, with prices. It helps users, and it helps Google match you with the right searches.
Questions and answers
You can ask and answer the common questions yourself. Otherwise you risk someone else answering for you.
Statistics
The profile shows which search terms people use to find you, how many requested directions and how many called you - free data for your decisions.
The most common mistakes
Keywords in the business name (“Ivanov EOOD - best repairs Sofia”) - a violation that leads to a penalty. Wrong opening hours - a customer turns up, finds the door closed, and an angry review follows. Several duplicate profiles for one location - they scatter the signals and need to be merged. Total silence - a profile last touched three years ago loses to active competitors.
Your Google Business Profile is the only channel where a small local business can beat a national chain. Simply because proximity and reviews count for more than an advertising budget.
The link with the website
The profile and the website reinforce each other: consistent details, LocalBusiness structured data on the site, a separate page for each city if you serve several. We have described the full method in local SEO: how to be first in Google Maps. It works the other way round too - a slow or awkward website wastes the click that came from the profile; ask us to check its technical condition before you pour effort into the map.
Conclusion
A precise category, complete details, real photos, a review system and regular activity. Five things - free, doable in one afternoon plus a little routine - that bring in customers who are searching right now, right in your city.
