Local SEO:
First on Google Maps

The Dilys team 15 August 2026

“Dentist Sofia”, “locksmith Plovdiv”, “accountant Varna”: every day thousands of Bulgarians search for a business near them, and Google shows three lucky winners on the map before it even gets to the classic results. Local SEO is the discipline that gets you into that top three. And it is the most underrated channel in Bulgaria.

What local SEO is and why it is a gold mine

Local SEO is optimization for searches with geographic intent: “service + city/neighborhood” or simply “service near me”. The results show up in two places: in the Local Pack (the top three with the map at the very top) and in the organic results for local keywords. The competition here is measured in dozens of companies, not thousands, which is why results come several times faster than with national SEO.

The numbers: over 40% of all Google searches have local intent, and 76% of people who search for a local business on their phone visit it within 24 hours. That is not traffic - those are customers with their wallets in hand.

Pillar 1: The Google Business Profile

Your Google Business Profile (formerly “Google My Business”) is your new shop window: many customers will see it rather than your website. The must-have minimum: an accurate category (primary + additional); complete details - address, phone, opening hours, service area; real photos of your premises, team and work (not stock images); regular posts - offers, news, tips; and a reply to every review, including the bad ones.

Pillar 2: Reviews, the currency of trust

Reviews are both a ranking factor and a choice factor: between two businesses in the top three, the one with 4.8★ from 120 reviews wins, not the one with 5.0★ from 6. Build a system: ask every satisfied customer for a review (in person, by SMS or with a QR code at the checkout), make it easy with a direct link and reply within days. Never buy fake reviews - Google is getting better and better at spotting them, and the penalty is having the whole profile taken down.

Searching for a local business on Google Maps from a phone
The map's top three takes over 60% of the clicks on local searches.

Pillar 3: A website with local signals

Google connects your map profile with your website, and the stronger the site's local signals, the more stable your position in the top three:

NAP consistency

Name, address and phone number, written exactly the same everywhere: website, Google, Facebook, directories. Inconsistencies erode the algorithm's trust.

LocalBusiness schema

Structured data with your address, coordinates, opening hours and services: the language in which Google understands who you are and where you are.

Local pages

Serve several cities? A separate, quality page for each one - not a list of 30 cities in the footer.

Local content

Case studies with local clients, involvement in local events, answers to questions specific to your city.

Pillar 4: Citations and local links

A presence in Bulgarian directories and platforms (Golden Pages, bg-mamma recommendations, industry registers, local media) reinforces your legitimacy. A few quality mentions from local websites carry more weight than 100 listings in dead directories - the “quality over quantity” principle applies just as fully to classic SEO.

Local SEO is a sprint compared with the marathon of national SEO: with weak competition, the first results come in 4-8 weeks, not 6 months.

The three most common mistakes in Bulgaria

An abandoned profile: created in 2019, with no photos and the wrong opening hours (a customer comes on Saturday, you are closed, and they write an angry review). Ignored reviews: not replying to a bad review is a second insult to the customer and a signal to Google. A website without a mobile version: local searches happen mostly on phones; a slow or unreadable site turns the click into a bounce. If your site is in this state, start with the foundation.

Conclusion

Local SEO delivers the fastest return in digital marketing for businesses with physical premises or regional services: low competition, hot customers, measurable results within weeks. An optimized profile, a review system, local signals on your website - and the map's top three is within reach.
