You have a website. It looks good. But when you search for your service on Google, you are nowhere to be found - not on the first page, not on the third. Here are the 12 reasons we see again and again when auditing Bulgarian websites, ordered from the most common to the most underestimated. Most of them can be fixed in days, not months.
1. The website is not indexed at all
It sounds unbelievable, but it is the number 1 reason for new websites. If “Discourage search engines” (Settings → Reading) was left switched on during development, Google will not index anything. The check takes 10 seconds: search for site:yourdomain.bg in Google or ask us for a free SEO check. If there are zero results, that is your problem, and it is fixed by unticking one box.
2. The website is too new
Google does not rank websites straight away. For a new domain, the realistic time to the first positions is 3-6 months for non-competitive keywords and 6-12 months for competitive ones. If your website is two months old, you probably don't have a problem, just impatience. (By the way, there is now a second channel for visibility too: AI search engines. Ask us whether they are reading your site.) We describe the detailed timeline in how long SEO takes.
3. There is no content to rank
A 5-page website with 100 words per page has nothing to offer Google. The search engine ranks pages that answer questions - if your pages just list services without explaining anything, there is nothing to show you for. Every service deserves its own in-depth page, and the blog catches the questions customers ask before they buy.
4. You are optimizing for the wrong keywords
You rank for “innovative business solutions”, while customers search for “accounting firm Plovdiv”. You write the way your business talks instead of the way the customer searches. Real market analysis starts with what people actually type into the search engine, not with what you would like to be called.
5. You target keywords you can't win
A new local shop will not come first for “shoes”: that is where national chains with budgets in the millions compete. But “women's genuine leather shoes Varna” is entirely achievable and brings in customers who are ready to buy. The strategy is to win where you stand a chance and grow upward from there.
6. Technical problems block crawling
A faulty robots.txt, an accidental noindex tag, broken internal navigation, invalid HTML, pages 4 clicks deep. Google has to be able to reach and understand every important page. We have seen a website rank poorly for months only because its template inserted three <title> tags on every page - one bug in the code eating up all the SEO work.
7. The website is slow
Speed is a ranking factor and, more importantly, a bounce factor: if a page takes 6 seconds to load on a phone, half the visitors leave before they see it. Google takes that into account. We explain how to fix it, with concrete numbers from a real case, in website speed and Core Web Vitals.
8. The mobile version is an afterthought
Google indexes your mobile version, not the desktop one. If on a phone the text is tiny, the buttons are crammed together and half the sections are not visible, that is the website you rank with, not the beautiful one on your monitor. Open your website on a phone and go through it like a customer. Surprises are common.
9. Nobody links to you
Links from other websites are votes of trust. To Google, a website without a single external link looks like a website nobody knows about. Don't buy link packages: they lead to penalties. Partners, suppliers, industry associations, local media, real customers: that is where your first honest links are.
10. Duplicate and “thin” content
Descriptions copied from the manufacturer, 20 almost identical “service + city” pages, texts churned out on a conveyor belt without editing. Google recognizes all of this and simply does not rank it. Better 10 excellent pages than 100 empty ones.
11. You ignore local search
If you have physical premises or serve a specific region, half of your potential customers search with “near me” or with the name of the city. Without a Google Business Profile and local signals, you are invisible to exactly the hottest customers. The full method is in local SEO: first on Google Maps.
12. It was done once and then abandoned
The most common scenario: someone paid for an “SEO package” in 2022, and nothing since. Meanwhile, competitors publish, update and grow. SEO is not a repair job, it is maintenance: a website that does not evolve slowly slides down, even when nothing has “broken”.
In almost every audit we find at least one problem that has cost the client months of traffic - and can be fixed in a single afternoon. The first step is to find out exactly what is holding you back.
Where to start
In order of priority: check indexing (the site: search), open the website on a phone, measure the speed, and see whether you have real content for the words customers type. If anything in these 12 points sounded familiar, you already know where to look. And if you want the full picture, SEO always starts with an audit, not with promises.
Conclusion
“My website isn't ranking” almost never has a single cause - usually there are three or four at once, each one fixable on its own. What matters is to sort them by severity and start with the technical ones, because without them everything else is building on sand.
