WooCommerce or Shopify is the “Android vs iPhone” debate of e-commerce. Both platforms power millions of stores worldwide, but for the Bulgarian market the answer is far from a tie. Here is an honest comparison from a team that has built stores on both.
The two philosophies in brief
Shopify is SaaS: you pay a monthly rent and get a hosted, “turnkey” platform - no worrying about hosting and updates, but on Shopify’s rules and within Shopify’s limits. WooCommerce is a free plugin on top of WordPress: the store is entirely yours - code, data, hosting - and can be extended without limits, but someone has to maintain it.
The real cost (in euros)
Shopify: the Basic plan costs about €27/month (~€324/year), plus a transaction fee if you don’t use Shopify Payments (which doesn’t support the Bulgarian market well), plus paid apps - realistically €40-80/month for a store that is up and running.
WooCommerce: the software itself is free. You pay for good hosting (€50-150/year), a domain and the one-off online store development (see also WordPress website prices) - with us, from €1,250. After the second year, WooCommerce almost always works out cheaper, and the store is an asset you own, not rent.
Econt and Speedy
WooCommerce has mature free or low-cost integrations with automatic waybills and courier offices. On Shopify, the choice is poorer and more expensive.
Bulgarian payment methods
Cash on delivery, bank transfer, myPOS, Borica - standard on WooCommerce. On Shopify, cash on delivery (still No. 1 in Bulgaria) has to be rigged up with artificial workarounds.
SEO control
WooCommerce gives you full control - URL structure, schema, speed, blog. Shopify is good, but it has hard limits that you can’t get around.
Invoicing and the Bulgarian National Revenue Agency (NRA)
Integrations with Bulgarian invoicing systems and audit requirements (SUPTO history) are considerably easier on WooCommerce.
When Shopify is the right choice
We’ll be honest - Shopify wins when: you sell mainly outside Bulgaria (especially to the US/Western Europe with card payments); you want zero technical involvement and are prepared to pay for it; you are running a quick product test (dropshipping, POD) and the store can die after 6 months with no loss.
When WooCommerce wins
For the classic Bulgarian store - its own stock, courier deliveries, cash on delivery, a long-term brand - WooCommerce is the stronger choice: full ownership of the asset, the local integrations work out of the box, costs fall over time and the SEO potential is greater. That is why 9 out of 10 stores we build are on WooCommerce. If the store is part of a larger website with content and a blog, the WordPress foundation is an extra plus - see our WordPress development service.
The platform doesn’t sell - the store does: speed, trust, an easy checkout and traffic. The wrong platform, however, can get in the way of your sales. Choose based on your market, not on what’s fashionable.
What if I’m already on the wrong platform?
Migration is a routine project: products, customers and orders are transferred, and the old URLs are redirected with 301 redirects so you don’t lose your rankings. Done properly, a migration preserves your SEO history - we have done it many times. What matters is that it is planned, not done “piecemeal”.
Conclusion
For a Bulgarian store with a long-term vision: WooCommerce. For a global test with zero maintenance: Shopify. And if you are unsure about your specific case, write to us: we will tell you honestly what fits your business, even if the answer is not a service we sell.
